Hezebollah and Israel (August 2006 / Av 5766)
A few months ago I suggested, along with many others, that the Israeli pullout from Gaza would not bring peace, but be hailed as a victory by the Hamas who would take up those Gaza settlements and make them a staging ground for terrorism. Not only did this occur, but far worse, the Hezebollah also saw an opportunity.
After the war of 1967 Israel occupied a small piece of territory called the Golan Heights. It is a small area that contains a small mountains riddled with bunkers from which Syria was launching terrorist attacks. Israel took up the land so that Syria would not be able to easily launch terrorist attacks from such an easily defensible area. Syria, of course, has always declared that there can be no peace until they get the Golan Heights back. Israel knows that there is but one reason Syria wants the Golan Heights : to gain a military advantage. There is no other reason, but now Lebannon has made the cessession of Golan Heights one of the sticking points in a cease fire. This indicates that Syria, not Lebannon, is really calling the shots.
I do not know exactly how this will turn out. I do not think that we are yet in the Tribulation, for the rapture and peace treaty must come first, but I do not believe that any peace will last. The problem is terrorism and militant Islam; not land issues. Israel should not back down, no matter what anti-Semetic resolutions the U.N. may come up with.
