Sharon Suffers stroke (January 2006 / Tevet 5766)

Last month I reported on the political turmoil in Israel with Sharon abandoning the Likud party to form his own "centrist" party and pursue the division of Jerusalem in exchange for "peace" with terrorist. Once before in history something similar occurred. Ehud Barak also promised to divide Jerusalem in exchange for "peace" with Arafat, but his assassination halted this plan. Now, this past month, Sharon experienced a major stroke. Whether he survives or not, few believe that he will return to power. It seems that providence has once again interceded to prevent the division of Jerusalem.

Now Pat Robertson was criticized for claiming that God had stricken Sharon, and although he has been misquoted, it is necessary to explain the Evangelical position. First, while Robertson is an evangelical, he is NOT a fundamentalist as claimed by the Media. He is a charismatic. The differences are known to most educated Christians but the media at large seems oblivious to this, choosing only to exagerrate his remarks in an attempt to ridicule "fundamentalists." In fact, it has never been a question of God damning or "smiting" Sharon, but a question of whether or not God is sovereign. If we believe that God is sovereign then we believe that God will not allow something to happen that He does not wish to happen. This is not to say that Jerusalem will never be divided, for it is possible that a temporary division of Jerusalem may result in the false peace of 1 Thessalonians, but that Jerusalem will ever be permantly divided is contrary to the Bible and to God's law.

It is my hope that Sharon will know salvation, and he may very well known it, but this does not exempt him from responcibility for dividing God's land. This is a tenant of both Orthodox Judaism and Evangelical Christianity. God is sovereign and His Will will prevail. What will happen in the next few months no one, save God, can say for sure, but we do know that events are taking place which will shape the future of the Middle East and the coming "peace." When that false peace will come is not known, but I pray for the sake of Israel that Jerusalem is not divided.
